Do’s & Don’ts of Cold Weather RVing
In my installation the new trailer wire harness is supplied with volt power for the trailer battery bank position 4 in the diagram from the distribution hub in the storage compartment. Typically, you would tap the output of the alternator to supply the trailer line. You would use a battery isolator or a solenoid to separate the banks – really only required if you keep the trailer and truck plugged together for long periods.
If you really want to get fancy you could use a “smart” charging switch, or a cross-charge regulator in place of an isolator or solenoid.

But in addition to the volt electrical supply, there may also be lights, fans, a refrigerator, or other electrical devices which use a 12 volt supply, like that of a car or truck. A volt DC system powers the RV refrigerator to keep food cold while the RV or camper trailer is moving from place to place. The same goes for the lights and fans. It also keeps the on-board batteries fully charged.
This system relies on the volt AC electrical power supply for amperage. It is possible to pull a volt power supply from the RV or camper trailer’s electrical system or volt campsite power supply. Then the volt supply can be stepped down to 12 volts after it is run through a power converter and to a particular appliance. These two electrical systems are treated independently from each other when diagnosing electrical problems, except for determining power to the converter.
The lights, fans, or refrigerator may each be on their own circuits, depending on the amperage required.
How To Connect RV Hookups
Welding cable comes in larger sizes, but is expensive as many times you have to buy a whole spool. If there is a supplier near you, see if they will sell the short lengths that you need instead. You might get lucky at your local welding shop. There are several possible ways to wire your inverter. Whichever option you select, you can do the wiring with standard 14 AWG, household type nonmetallic cable.
However you do it, you absolutely must ensure that you do not have your converter turned on when the inverter is on.
They also recommend 3 stage chargers. Charging voltages for flooded and AGM batteries are different, so the charger should be settable to the type of battery you have. Both types will have a longer life if they are not discharged as deeply, but, it seems like for a camper van that might only be used 30? The batteries live inside the van in a case that is vented to the outside. Another option that is just becoming practical is to use Lithium batteries as used in electric cars.
They would reduce weight and size by quite a bit over the lead acid batteries, but are still expensive, and would likely take some careful homework to get right. It provides for up to 12 DC circuits and up to 4 AC circuits. This looks like another good option for a combined AC and DC distribution panel… Battery Isolator This gadget allows the van alternator to be used to charge the house battery, while preventing the van starting battery from being drained by powering loads in the RV.
It isolates the van starting battery from the house battery when the ignition switch is off so that RV loads only discharge the house battery.

For financial and environmental reasons, this first step will make you happy. This step will make you even happier. Meanwhile, your generator will remain quiet, except on rainy days. Unfortunately, this step is nearly impossible. If you need AC, visit a campsite and plug in. Controller Types A charge controller limits the amount and rate of power to prevent battery overcharging, and it shuts off the batteries if stored power falls below 50 percent to avoid draining. A Maximum Power Point Tracking MPPT controller goes a step further by optimizing the conversion of solar energy in order to produce the best voltage for your batteries.
Lead-Acid Battery Lead-acid batteries rely on a chemical reaction between chemicals and water to store energy. This internal process occurs between plates sealed inside the battery. Lead-acid batteries are mass-produced for cars, trucks, RVs and other vehicles, so prices for these are much less than those for other battery technologies. They have chemicals that use one process for storing energy and an opposite process when distributing it; they continue to cycle back and forth, giving the battery a much longer life than traditional batteries.

Remove the Wire Jackets Remove the outer jacket by scoring a line into the cable and bending the cable back until the jacket rips from the inner wires. After installing my step bars, I decided to wire up some running board lights that operate when the doors are open or unlocked i. Thanks to Borderbrat for some reference material in this thread: We’ll see how they hold up, but regardless, this approach is a good reference for just about anything, just be sure to use a relay if you use anything other than low-current LEDs.
Before you begin, disconnect the battery. I wanted the lights to turn on and off with the dome light i. As previously mentioned, I chose a low-current LED solution, so I can directly power them off the stock power wire and ground wire According to the stock wiring diagrams available elsewhere on TW and the Haynes manual, the power wire is a constantly powered 7. The easiest place to locate them is the driver’s side pillar.
I inserted an inline 1A fuse to isolate the LEDs from the stock wiring. Here you can see the tapped white power wire and the blue control wire. Be sure to tuck the wires back into the conduit and zip ties for strain relief. After running the wires down to the left kick panel, I ran a quick test to make sure I tapped the correct wires. I chose to run the passenger side wire through the cab instead of underneath the truck in order to avoid the exhaust and road hazards.
The connection will be made near the left kick panel where I plan to insert an override switch and a 1A fuse to specifically protect against the LEDs and wires

First why are you wanting to meter each individual campsite? It is usually way to expensive as you have found out. Don’t know how your campground is laid out, but if it is tight you could put a post on the inside corner of 4 sites. But you have to make sure that the way they would normally park their cord can reach the pole. The other big thing is to make sure you have large enough wire for the runs to insure that there is not a huge voltage drop to each site.
They sent me all the raw footage and I have put it together into several videos that I’m sure will be of interest to you DIY RV solar installers or just folks that are curious and wish to learn a bit about it.
The Land Yacht had 6 existing light fixtures that use 18 small incandescent bulbs. We wanted to utilize these existing fixtures so we began looking into LED bulbs that are made for these 12v sockets. We quickly found that these 12v LED bulbs are not cheap! And at a fraction of the cost I decided to give them a try. Once the light diffuser is installed the ebay LED are pretty dim and the color is a cool blue and I much prefer a warmer hue.
When looking for 12v bulbs be sure to know what type of socket you need as there is a handful of options out there. Since travel trailers are made to run on 12v this meant I could hack off the transformer and wire the LED lights directly into the trailers 12v system. All the trailer lights run on 12v DC power — even while connected to AC shore power.
The AC power goes to a power converter that transforms the AC current to DC to run lights, water pump and maintain a charge on your battery.
Blue Ox 7 blade to 6 round coiled electrical cable I never found anyone who did this specific setup but I found many who had talked about installing individual pieces on a Honda Fit or a different make and model of vehicle. I began with removing the bumper and exposing the front end of the car to install the Blue Ox BX base plate. I have removed quite a few bumpers in my former years working in an auto body shop. This was relatively easy and took about 10 minutes.

January 22, Campskunk , How Tos 11 Comments First off, I don’t even HAVE a house, so this is for those of you who still have sticks and brick attachments, or are visiting folks who do. Houses have connections that come in handy for us RVers staying at a residence, and I’m not talking about the electricity and water.
I’m talking about sewer connections you can dump your waste water tanks into. City sewer connections have what’s called a clean-out, which is a large opening into the sewer line just as it leaves the house and heads toward the city sewer connection. It’s perfect for dumping your gray and black water tank contents if you don’t want to drive across town and give people money, which is usually what you have to do when dumping in a populated area. The trick, however, is to find this clean-out, because few homeowners know where they are.
In houses with connections to a municipal sewage treatment system, the sewer line comes out from under the house and usually makes a bee-line for the street where the sewer lines are. If you’re in the middle of the block this is easy — corner lots could go either way. Water meters are another utility usually on the side of the lot where the sewer hookup is, so that will help give you a clue to location.
