These meetings started with Kyle and talking to her online via our blogs for about 10 months before meeting in person. Once I did meet her, I also met others as she seems to be the queen bee of Gringas married to Chileans online. Anyway, this week Kyle decided, via a suggestion from Heather , that we should all do posts on the same topic on the same day.

The self-name is cultura chilena Orientation Identification. There exist different explanations about the origins of the name “Chile. In contrast to many other Latin American nations, Chile has not experienced the emergence of strong regionalism or conflicting regional cultural identities. Since the late nineteenth century, both the northern and southern regions have been mainly populated by people coming from the central region, helping to strengthen the country’s cultural homogeneity.
Notwithstanding the existence of a strong dominant national culture, some cultural regional traditions can be identified. In the southern region the Mapuche Indians are a large cultural group who strongly contributed to the formation of Chilean culture. Some two thousand miles off the coast of Chile lies the remote Eastern Island, which is inhabited by twenty-eight hundred native islanders who still keep alive many of their Polynesian cultural traditions.
Since the late nineteenth century, Chilean culture has also been nurtured by the arrival of a large group of immigrants, mainly Germans, British, French, Italians, Croatians, Palestinians, and Jews. Today they fill leading positions in academic and cultural circles as well as within the country’s political leadership. Nevertheless, many Chileans are often not even aware of their ethnic and cultural backgrounds and they firmly embrace the dominant culture of mainstream society.

The most popular post on this blog for 2 years describes why Chile is the best country to move to , mainly because the constant flow of terrible news about the economies of Europe and the fall of the United States drives some people to seek an alternative; but, relocating to Chile is a poor choice for many people.
This post is now the most popular because I discuss the prospects for foreigners who aspire to work in Chile, the topic people care most about. The biggest problem with Chile is that it is difficult for a foreigner to find work, and the available jobs outside the mining industry pay substantially less than in the USA and Europe. Humans are a tribal species and every country subscribes to the false idea that foreigners take jobs from locals without spending money to create demand for local goods and services.
A prudent migrant saves enough to stay in Santiago for a year, as that is the amount of time that may be required to secure employment. The good news for foreign women is that companies prefer foreign to Chilean women. The government requires companies to take care of Chilean women who become pregnant so most companies avoid or are reluctant to hire young women. Foreign women are expected to be independent so companies are more willing to hire them.
Many foreigners teach English, as Chileans highly value native speakers, but the pay is low. Emily gives tips on finding a job in Chile that you might find useful.

The bishops were summoned to the Vatican over that country’s sex abuse scandal. Prior to the meeting, Pope Francis gave each bishop a list of themes upon which to meditate. The product of those meditations, the intercession of the Holy Spirit, and of Pope Francis’ meeting, appears the mass resignation of those involved. Victims of clerical sexual abuse in Chile report being shamed and even demonized by Church leaders.
Some of the guilty have escaped justice due to statutes of limitation under Chilean law. Pope Francis prepared the bishops by speaking in his homilies about bishops stepping down when the time came to take their leave. While it was widely speculated that Pope Francis was hinting at his own possible resignation, For a long time, perhaps for centuries, the people of the Church have been preyed upon by a small, but persistent number of corrupt clergy.
To protect their credibility as a moral authority, the Church has cultivated a culture of silence to prevent embarrassment. Ironically, this effort has cost the Church its credibility. Only now, as a result of massive public pressure, has the Church finally be able to come to terms with abusers in its ranks.

Chinchorro mummification[ edit ] While many cultures throughout the world have sought to focus on preserving the dead elite, the Chinchorro tradition performed mummification on all members of their society, making them archaeologically significant. The decision of egalitarian preservation is proven in the mummification of the relatively less productive members of society meaning those who could not contribute to the welfare of others; the elderly , children , infants and miscarried fetuses.
It is often the case that children and babies received the most elaborate mummification treatments. The earliest one, the Acha man, dates to BC. Often Chinchorro mummies were elaborately prepared by removing the internal organs and replacing them with vegetable fibers or animal hair. In some cases an embalmer would remove the skin and flesh from the dead body and replace them with clay.
The mummies continued to be made until about BC, making them contemporary with Las Vegas culture and Valdivia culture in Ecuador and the Norte Chico civilization in Peru.
